Our Guiding Principles
The UNCRC & ECM
The BSEYC has adopted its positioning with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). And within the Government's Every Child Matters (ECM) approach. In particular we focus on, and act within the following articles of the UNCRC:
Article 2
Protection Against Discrimination ~ We are an open organisation and gladly take the opinions and views of every one in our community.
Article 4
Have your rights made a reality by the Government ~ We campaign for our rights and to affect change through active involvement with local government particularly and to the MP's.
Article 12
This is very important to us and is one of our key points. 'Say what you think and be listened to by adults when they make decisions that affect you ~ We actively aim to promote this and encourage all members to do this, through support and informal training we aim to empower young people for this, as well as partner with all levels of local authorities.
Article 13
Again this is a guiding principle for us. 'Get information and express what you think, unless it is against other people's rights' ~ We try to be a transparent organisation and consistently disseminate (give) information to our members. This is also seen largely by Project Notice.
Article 15
Meet with others and join or set up clubs, unless it is against other people's rights ~ We promote this through encouraging more and better youth facilities where people can join clubs and meet with new people.
And the following outcomes of Every Child Matters (ECM):
Stay safe
By campaigning and providing more (and better) youth facilities we hope more young people can get involved, stay out of trouble, and stay safe.
Enjoy and achieve
All young people involved with the BSEYC are encouraged to enjoy their time, and to participate in schemes like MV where they can achieve. This is on top of the other benefits of membership.
Make a positive contribution
This is quite obvious we hope, all members that contribute to the BSEYC are making a positive contribution to society and the lives of young people in and beyond Bury St Edmunds.
