Membership is open to anyone between the ages of 13 and 19, from any background, with any amount of past experience of this kind of organisation.
We welcome everyone, and provide support to meet the needs of our members. In order to be a member you must either live, or spend most of your time (working, going to school or socialising), within about 15 miles of Bury St Edmunds.
Members of the youth council are involved in a wide variety of activities. Mainly our members attend meetings, to help with the decision making processes. We also have other jobs such as helping with finance, handing out flyers, organising bands, or helping with events.
Our meetings are held once a month, but there are often extra meetings based on necessity. In these meetings we normally enjoy refreshments and then plan or evaluate our different projects. Meetings are informal and attendance is never obligatory.
Members chose to commit varying amounts of time to the youth council, in and out of meetings. You can chose how much energy you put into it, but we find that the more you input the more you get back.
We only have one condition for membership, and that is that you respect other members of the council and the community.
Being a member of the BSEYC means we will help and support you in signing up to other national organisations such as Young NCB (a national network for Under 18's). We will provide you with opportunities to attend international meetings, national charity boards, training courses and much more. We also provide training in First Aid and Child protection.
Our members enjoy discounted classes at the Self Centre on Moreton Hall, and the benefits of the Bite Card, which gives discounts at food outlets in train stations across the country.
Your time with us counts towards your V for Volunteering award, and your community service for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. We also provide our members with the opportunity to do the Arts Award, a nationally recognised accreditation scheme. This opportunity is kindly provided by CEG Theatre Services.
Working with the BSEYC will help you to develop your skills in communication, presentation and leadership. It will boost your confidence and self esteem. You will also get to know that you are making a difference to the lives of young people around BSE and beyond.
Everything you learn and experience while with us will be valuable for life; to get jobs and to get into University. It is a great thing to be able to write on your CV or UCAS application.
Most importantly, being a member of the youth council is a chance to meet new people, to share a wealth of skills, and to have fun!
