UNCRC & ECM - Guiding Principles

The BSEYC has adopted its position with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). We also follow the government's Every Child Matters (ECM) scheme. In particular we focus on, and act within the following articles of the UNCRC:

Article 2
Protection against Discrimination ~ We are an open organisation and gladly listen to the opinions and views of every one in our community.

Article 4
Have your rights made a reality by the Government ~ We campaign for our rights and to try to affect change through active involvement with local government

Article 12
Say what you think and be listened to by adults when they make decisions that affect you ~ We actively promote this and work with our partners in the local authorities to get young people’s views heard.

Article 13
Get information and express what you think, unless it is against other people's rights ~ We are a transparent organisation and consistently provide information to our members. We have also set up Project Notice which aims to keep young people informed about opportunities in the local community.

Article 15
Meet with others and join or set up clubs, unless it is against other people's rights ~ We promote this through encouraging a wider variety of youth facilities in the area.

We also follow outcomes of Every Child Matters (ECM):

Stay safe
By campaigning and providing more youth facilities we hope that more young people can get involved, stay out of trouble, and stay safe. All of our events are carefully planned with this in mind.

Enjoy and achieve
All young people involved with the BSEYC are encouraged to enjoy their time, and to participate in schemes like MV where they can achieve. This is on top of the other benefits of membership (for more, please see the membership section of our website).

Make a positive contribution
All members of the council willingly contribute to meetings and to our organisation. Through the projects that we run, they are all benefitting the local society and the lives of young people in and beyond Bury St Edmunds.
